Central Regional Cup Round 2 14.12.08

Holytown Boys Club 3 - 0 Stirling City F.C.

An offer to play this game at Kings Park was accepted by Holytown as they had difficulty securing a home park to play on. Holytown showed their skill on the Stirling pitch from early on and despite both teams making a nervous start to this game City were breaking out well as both teams probed for the opener. City were not able to get the ball down and keep possession for long periods which made for some sloppy play, catching City players out of position and leaving gaps for Holytown to break into. A slick move by Holytown broke the offside trap and as the City defence appealed, they went on to open the scoring. A poor goal to lose but it was early enough in the game and left time for City to make amends. Jack had a chance to bring City level with a free kick but the keeper had it covered well and made a stunning save as he tipped it over the bar to keep his clean sheet intact. City’s corner taking was not up to it’s usual standard as most failed to pass the front post and Holytown were able to comfortably clear their lines. No further scoring saw the first half end 1 - 0. City had managed to have a their fair share of possession in the first half but had nothing to show for it, which frustrated the supporters, management and team. The starting 11 retook the field of play as City looked to get back on level terms. Liam and Henny were closed down quickly so Josh swapped with Henny to see if his pace could help create City’s opener. Holytown forced another goal which came down City’s left side - the attacker was able to waltz through the City defence as his shot hit the roof of the net to take them 2 - 0 up. David came on for Josh as City looked to change the dynamics of the team. Another free kick by Jack went straight to the keeper who was having a good day as he was able to gather in most shots which seemed to be hit straight at him. Holytown got another as confusion within the City team saw them score a third to seal the game after Scott failed to clear and his header went towards the player who was coming back from an offside position. Ross moved to defence as Stuart C was taken off at the back when City put Josh back on and changed formation looking to get back into the game. Lady luck seemed to be missing today as City squandered chances and were unable to get even a consolation goal despite the best efforts of Liam who even found himself coming back to defensive duty to pick up the ball. The game ended 3 - 0 to Holytown who now move to round 3, City returning to league duty in the new year.

The ‘Mobile Maintenance (Scotland)’ Man of the Match was given to Scott & Liam.

Match Report.

L.L.Y.S.F. Tournament 01.08.08

Celtic Boys Club 2 - 1 Stirling City F.C.

City’s first game of the new season, played in their new away strip sponsored by Mobile Maintenance (Scotland) was against a very well organised Celtic team. Celtic dominated the first half being first to every ball, supported each other well and were strong in each challenge. City got off to their familiar slow start although they managed to shut out the Celtic attack for long periods. Celtic gave a lesson in fluid ‘pass and move’ techniques and were awarded with a penalty as they advanced near the by-line. Colin in the City goal was able to get a hand to the shot as he dived to his right but the slippery conditions and power in the shot saw the ball carry over the line and Celtic took a well deserved lead. City were unable to string any number of passes together as they were closed down quickly when they received the ball. Celtic were always a threat going forward and came close on a number of occasions before they found the back of the net from a long clearance down the middle of the park which caught the City defence on their heels. The Celtic forward composed himself and struck home from 17 yards as Colin closed him down. Suthy and Adam were changed for Sandy and Harry just as the heavens opened. City began to find their way around the park but the ref blew for half-time. With no further changes made City came back out looking to take the game to Celtic. From the kick off it was apparent the team had awoken as they found space down the left flank and opened the Celtic defence but the wet conditions saw the ball skid out for a throw. Harry found some space down the left after a through ball from Ewan and cut the ball back to Henny who timed his run well and struck home to bring City back into the game. City were finding their range as more passing moves were completed and Celtic had to work harder to retrieve the ball. Josh and Jack came on for Henny and Liam shortly followed by William replacing Matt as City changed to 3-5-2. Harry came close to scoring from 6 yards but his header floated over the bar with another long range effort a few minutes later also coming close. At the other end of the field, Celtic were still allowed to have shots but Colin managed to keep a second half clean sheet with some athletic saves and the aid of his new defensive line up of Scott, Jamie and Sandy. Adam went back on to replace Richard and Ewan came off allowing Stuart back on. Celtic finished the game in City’s half as the ref blew for full time. A lot of positives for City to take forward into Saturday’s game against Norwegian opposition.

L.L.Y.S.F. Tournament 02.08.08

Lillesand IL 2 - 5 Stirling City F.C.

City almost had a dream start to this fixture with a goal scored in 14 seconds but unfortunately it was deemed offside. City were in their new home kit which for the third year running is sponsored by Ewen Cooper Cars. Positive play was the order of the day from the City team who gave their loyal supporters lots to cheer about in this game. Josh started this game with Liam at the front, Adam, Harry, Ross and Richard in midfield and Sandy, Scott, David, Jamie and Colin forming the defence. Liam found himself free within the box and slotted home for City’s first goal after a sustained period of attack. Lillesand were unable to penetrate the defence as City stood firm at the back for the whole first half. Josh latched on to a through ball and ran at the keeper with 2 Norwegians chasing him down - he calmly lobbed the keeper who got his fingertips to the ball but he was unable to hold on to it and Josh collected it as it fell to take City 2 - 0 up. City were comfortable with the ball and given time to find passes through midfield and from another attack they were awarded a corner. Adam played short to Harry who shifted the ball infield and wrapped his boot around the ball but it didn’t have enough curl on it as it went just wide of the far post. Confidence was high within the City team and they seemed to attack Lillesand’s goal at will - another corner saw Adam cross to the back post where Sandy had timed his run to perfection and he headed it home for his first gaol in City colours. City were now cruising at 3 - 0 but concentration was beginning to drop and slight errors sneaking into the game. Half time was declared with no further scoring. Liam, Suthy and Ross were taken off for Henny, Jack and Matt as City came back onto the field. City continued pressing for the fourth goal and it came as Jack latched onto a through ball wide on the right and took it to the goal line. He crossed the ball low and hard along the ground which caught the keeper out who tried to pick it up but it bounced off him into the back of the net. City’s midfield were quick to advance looking for City’s 5th goal but were not able to reshape quick enough to match Lillesand who were attacking in numbers. It wasn’t long before City lost a goal through a lack of concentration. Josh had came off as City changed formation to 3-5-2 with Ewan taking up position just in front of defence, Jamie moving to midfield and Harry up front as it looked like City had this all wrapped up, a mix up in the City defence allowed Lillesand through to score their first goal of the tournament. Growing in confidence with every minute, the Norwegians began to control much of the play as they attacked the City back four on several occasions with only the final touch in front of goal and the City keeper preventing them from scoring. Jack almost scored from a free kick wide on the left but it went wide of the post. Henny also had a few chances but he was getting caught offside. Lillesand got themselves another goal to bring it to 4 - 2 and they started to look as though they would score more. City returned to 4-4-2 formation with Richard moving to right back to give extra cover. Adam came off, Harry dropped back to midfield and Liam came back on as City tried to get their 5th goal. It wasn’t long coming as Richard found himself deep in the corner he passed back to Ewan who struck it first time from 30 yards and it sailed over the keeper into the net. A contender for goal of the tournament!! City still looked vulnerable at the back as Lillesand attacked in what was to be the last move of the game. City had secured 3 points in a 5 - 2 victory to take them joint top of the table.

L.L.Y.S.F. Tournament 03.08.08

Kennelwood United 3 - 2 Stirling City F.C.

This was the final game of the league section of the tournament - Celtic had already wrapped up the group with a strong victory over Lillesand in the morning. Kennelwood started the stronger team - City chasing shadows on many occasions which forced further errors and a lack of awareness around the field. Kennelwood took advantage of this scoring first to take a 1 - 0 lead. Ross tried to calm everyone down as frustration crept more into City’s game but his advice was not being heeded. United won every aerial ball partly due to a height advantage but mainly due to City’s lack of desire to win the challenge. When the ball was played at ground level, City had the skill to play through United and when the team had settled down, they scored a well worked equaliser after Harry found the goal line and fired the ball across the face of the goal where it was missed by Josh but Henny on the back post dragged it back to shoot and after the ball bounced around off other players in the crowded box he finally slotted it home much to the relief of the touchline. City were spurred on by this and started to come into the game more putting United under pressure as the game went on. Henny scored his and City’s second of the day with City looking the more comfortable of the two teams. Harry picked up an injury and was replaced by William just on the stroke of half time. City started strongly in the second half but United drew level after Henny picked up the ball in midfield and was closed by three United players. With every City player standing still United won the ball and advanced on goal. United 2 - City 2. Henny was ordered off at the restart for dissent taking City down to 10 men. Josh came off for Adam, Sandy and Ewan for Matt and Suthy as City tried to get themselves back into the game. With time running out and only 10 men United remained strong to close out the game and seal the victory. The City team should learn from their own mistakes in this game as the result could have been so different.

F.V.F.D.A. 17’s League 23.08.08

Stirling City F.C. 3 - 2 Claremont F.C.

First match of the new season was a home tie against the top two from last season and it lived up to expectations. City were first to break through as William crossed from the left, the Claremont keeper got the flight of the ball wrong and Harry lobbed it over his head. 1 - 0 City with ten minutes played. Although settling into the game City were not able to keep the ball for extended periods with the defence almost caught ball watching on several occasions as Claremont attacked down right. William was finding space to run into for City and covered a lot of ground, assisting Matt when required. With some players missing Richard was playing right back to cover and moving forward when he was able. Liam was close to getting a second for City but his effort was slightly wide. Ewan picked up an injury to his knee which a forced an early substitution for Henny. Harry and Liam were unlucky to be consistently caught offside chasing through balls deep in Claremont’s half. The ref blew for half time with no more scoring from either side. William, still requiring a few more weeks to get fully match fit was exchanged for Antony who over the second half was given space to run wide or come inside at will. Despite the increased City possession Claremont drew level from a set piece - a free kick floated into the box was not cleared decisively and the attacker ran along the edge of the 18 yard line to find space and struck home low to Colin’s left. City would have to lift their game if they were going to win. Henny was one on one with the Claremont keeper who saved well from his low shot to force a corner. City’s second was Jack’s first as he pounced on a mistake by the Claremont keeper to slot it home into the open net. Claremont went all out to get an equaliser and it came after a sustained attack brought about a hand ball by Josh as he tried to get out of the way of Scott’s clearance. The ref gave a penalty which was low to Colin’s right but it bounced off the post. City had not reacted and Claremont pounced on the loose ball to knock it in past Colin. Just as it looked as though the game would end all square City were awarded a penalty for hand ball at the other end. With Ewan off the field Jack took command and was able to stay calm and slip it past the keeper. 3 - 2 for City with the game almost finished. Neither team was able to convert any further chances and the game finished with a win to City who now face Tillicoultry at Menstrie next Saturday.

Ewen Cooper Cars Man of the Match was given to the whole team.

===============================================================

F.V.F.D.A. 17’s League 30.08.08

Tillicoultry Colts 0 - 3 Stirling City F.C.

City started their second league game against top of the league Tillicoultry. Both teams seemed to lack desire and spark which made for a dull first half from a spectators point of view. The pitch at West End Park was soft which made the going heavy for both teams which didn’t help matters. City showed flashes of inspiration through a number of players, Richard down the right wing for example, but there was no clinical finish. Just before half time, Henny went on a mazy run through the Tilli defence and earned City a corner. Ewan crossed the ball over toward the rear post straight onto Scott’s head who fired it home. 1 - 0 to City just as the referee blew for half time. No changes to the team allowed City to settle into the second half as they attempted to break down Tilli for a second goal. City carved out another corner which was sent to the near post by Liam. Jack flicked it on and Henny volleyed it into the net to take City 2 - 0 in front. Ewan was brought off for Ant and Henny for Josh as City looked to stretch their lead and secure the three points. William and Ant found themselves able to work the left flank and created a number of flowing moves but the final finish was not there to use the increased possession to good advantage. Jack had burst into life as he started to command the midfield and create chances down both wings. From one of these chances, Liam almost got himself onto the scoresheet as he found himself onside and one on one with the stand-in Tilli keeper. The keeper stood tall until the last second as Liam tried to send him the wrong way but he managed to clear it with his legs. A free kick 25 yards out was struck sweetly by Jack but it rebounded off the crossbar and was cleared to safety. Tilli had a few chances of their own which kept the City back three on their toes, Jamie, Scott and Matt dealing with most things comfortably with Ross dropping back if needed. City managed to get a third goal after Jack played the ball through to Liam who volleyed it into the back of the net to take City 3 - 0 ahead. City kept possession to try and create chances but the game ended with no further goals scored. City now face Larkhall Thistle in the S.Y.F.A. Challenge Cup at Kings Park on Saturday.

The ’Mobile Maintenance (Scotland)’ Man of the Match was given to William.

===============================================================

Stirling City F.C. 3 - 6 Larkhall Thistle

City got off to a dream start when William, out wide on the left put in an inch perfect pass to Liam who headed home after one and a half minutes of play. City were still without usual keeper Colin who had to sit this game out due to a ban. Stand-in Harry did well to save City’s blushes in the first half but his team mates let him down in the second half. City were the dominant force for 40 minutes of the first period, creating chances for the strikers or midfield at every turn. Jack was unlucky not to have scored a few today from open play and dead ball situations. The team kept their shape well, covering for forward runs and supporting play was excellent. Matt scored his first goal for the Club - unfortunately it was an own goal to bring Larkhall back into the game at 1 - 1. City took the lead again after a penalty award saw Ewan slot it home past the keeper. Larkhall were quick to regroup and just before half time the defensive errors which were to be City’s downfall started. Thistle managed to bring it back to 2 each just before the ref blew for half time. No changes by City allowed the same 11 players back on the field and to face the wind. Thistle broke down the left side and scored another goal to take them into the lead at 3 - 2. City gathered themselves together to force another penalty as Richard was brought down as he ran through clean on goal. The Thistle player was lucky to only see yellow as it may have warranted a red. Ewan stepped up again to slot it home for his second and bring City back into the game. Things then went rapidly downhill from there for City. Larkhall found themselves in front as a long ball to the back post found the forward all on his own - he brought the ball under control and fired it across the face of goal. It found a Thistle foot and went into the back of the net - City were left standing still. Things did not improve and it wasn’t long before Thistle scored again with confidence growing in Larkhall’s play. From a corner a further penalty was awarded to Thistle but Harry got down brilliantly to his left to save and hopefully inspire City. Another defensive error allowed Thistle through again soon after took the score to 5 - 3. City tried long balls down either flank with degrees of success but the middle of the park and City’s defensive area were at the mercy of the Larkhall side as all of the control, support and shape that showed so much promise in the first period had vanished. Thistle got their sixth and final goal to kill off the tie with only 10 minutes left on the clock. A few ifs and buts for City and a convincing win for the travelling side. City are back on league duty against Riverside next week.
