Fosters Central Scottish Amateur Football League Division 1B

Stirling City F.C. 1 vs 1 Elderslie

Stirling City kicked off season 2009 - 2010 competing in their new league at home against Paisley side Elderslie. City with a new look to the side with several summer additions seen S.White, Scott McInnes, N. McInness, Purves, Donnelly and Fowler make their debuts. City took the game to Elderslie straight from the kick off and Reid was presented with an excellent chance to open the scoring as he beat the offside trap and raced clear on the goal keeper. The keeper came out best as Reid drove the ball against his legs. Any threat Elderslie had on the City defence, McInness, White, Currie and McInness dealt with comfortably. Fowler and Donnelly were beginning to dominate the midfield and Millan and Purves giving good support on the flanks. City were pushing hard for the opener and Monteith and Reid were looking menacing as they were stretching the Elderslie defence all over the park. Several half chances fell to Reid, Millan and Donnelly but neither forced the keeper into any real saves. Elderslie had an opportunity just after the half hour mark when White was judged to have upended the striker 20 yards out. The resulting free kick seen Wardrop called into action for the first time turning round his right hand post. City remained dominant in terms of possession for the remainder of the half but both sides went in all square at half time. No chances made by either side at the interval with all still to play for. Elderslie started well in the second half, resulting in a few long balls in behind the city defence. Wardrop dealt with a few snap shots around the edge of the box as City were given a taster that the visitors were very much still in this match. City were however dealt a blow when they found themselves one down on the hour mark. A through ball in behind McInnes seen the striker link well with his partner. The ball eluded white as it dropped in behind him but looked to have done enough as the adjusted to tackle the striker as he bore down on goal. The ref however deemed the tackle an infringement and awarded a penalty kick. The resulting kick was saved by Wardrop but came back off the post in which the striker reacted quickest to score from close range. The home side now had it all to do as the looked to score the equaliser. Reid, Monteith and Millan all had efforts on goal but again failed to hit the target. Fowler was next to go closest as he linked well with Millan and broke free from midfield as he drove towards goal. Presented with a one on one with the keeper, the Elderslie keeper again came out on top saving well with his legs. Dickson replaced Purves with 20 mins to go with Millan switching flanks. Dickson presented the strikers some good ammunition from the wide areas but no-one could get on the end of his crosses. With the clock ticking down city made their last two changes with Beveridge and B.White replacing Millan and Currie. B.White was upended whilst chauffeuring the ball out of play. His resulting kick went the length of the park. As City looked to win the ball back, the Elderslie midfielder looked to pass back to his keeper which Reid intercepted on the edge of the box and tucked under the advancing keeper to level the scoring. This was the least City deserved as they had the majority of the play and chances in which the keeper had kept his side in the match. No further chances fell to either side as the final whistle seen a share of the points. Birds & Bees man of the match went to Stuart White. City next face Chryston tonight (Wednesday) at home on league duty then play Cambusnethan Talbolt in the League Cup on Saturday.

Team: Wardrop, Currie, (B.White), Scott McInnes, S.White, N.McInnes, Purves, (Dickson), Donnelly, Fowler, Millan, (Beveridge), Monteith & Reid.
