East of Scotland Cup Rd 2 29.11.08

Stirling City F.C. 2 - 3 Uphall Station

City went into this East of Scotland Cup tie with a depleted squad. G. Wilson and McColl were missing from last weeks starting line-up with Cameron Anderson and Clarke taking their place. City started bright and seen Reid go close on a few occasions but nothing to trouble the Uphall goalkeeper. Reid’s pace and Boyle link up play were causing the Uphall defence problems and the visitor’s were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men when Reid was upended as he raced through on goal with the defender only picking up a caution. Millan in the heart of midfield was a power of strength as he was dominating the midfield. City were however caught on the back foot on a few occasions as Uphall did look dangerous in attack and both Dickson and Anderson in fullback area’s had a power shift working tirelessly up and down the flanks. City almost grabbed the lead when Boyle connected onto a cross from the right but his headed effort just crept wide of the target. As half time approached, Anderson was judged to have upended the Uphall midfielder on the edge of the area. The resulting free kick came down off the bar with no-one reacting to the rebound other than Walker but the striker forced the ball over the line. This was injustice on City who had looked the more likely to open the scoring. C. Kerr who was struggling most of second half was replaced by Poynton just after half time and City knew they had to up the tempo to get back into the match. Ten minutes into the restart Uphall grabbed their second. A crossed ball was met by the striker and Clarke challenged and the effort from close range looked as if Wardrop would smother but a mistake allowed the ball under him and City now had a long way back to get something out of this tie. Credit to the whole team however as their never say die attitude seen them roll up the sleeves as they looked to get back into the match. A mistake by the left winger who had tracked back to help defend as City attacked was robbed by L. Wilson and his pass across goal was side footed home by Reid from close range. City knew they had Uphall on the defence as the game was now end to end. Walker and Clarke were now trying to keep the defence together and done so well and had some timely tackles to keep out the Uphall attack. Uphall thought they had extended their lead when the left back had ventured forward in attack and as the ball was laid into his path he struck with the outside of this left foot and as the shot seemed certain to curl into the corner across goal, Wardrop threw himself to claw the ball round the post. City took heart from this and searched for the equaliser. L. Wilson again thought he had set up Reid for the equaliser as he raced down the right and his cross seen Reid free at the back post but somehow couldn’t convert what seemed an open goal. Not keeping the wee man down, he made amends 5 mins later as he was sent clear, beating the offside trap and tucked beyond the onrushing keeper to draw level. City now looked likely to try grab a winner as they looked to be getting on top of the match. As the game drew closer to injury time and with extra time on the cards, a cruel ending to what was a spectacular game seen a cross from the left ricochet off an Uphall player and sneak into the net from 5 yards. A cruel blow to City as a gallant effort from the whole team seen the game snatched right at the death. Birds & Bees man of the match went to whole team for a gallant effort. On Saturday City travel to Dundee in the 4th round of Scottish Cup to face Barnhill. A bus will be leaving Birds & Bees at approx
11.30am and any supporters interested in travelling with the team should contact Barry to advise of their interest.

Team: Wardrop, Anderson, Dickson, Walker, Clarke, L.Wilson, C.Kerr, (Poynton), Millan, Cameron Anderson, Boyle & Reid.  Not Used: McColl & Henderson

Match Report

1st Division League Cup Rd 1

Drumpellier Thistle 3 - 4 Stirling City F.C.

Stirling city kicked off season 2008/2009 with an away fixture to Drumpellier Thistle on League Cup duty. City on paper always seemed to struggle on day 1 and a few changes were made to the team from that what finished the season. City got out the traps flying and were presented with a few openings in front of goal. B.Kerr and Boyle had the Drumpellier defence on their toes but could not convert any of their chances. The opening came when Boyle turned home after good pressing play by midfield of C.Kerr, McDowell and Reynolds. City seemed to relax and soon doubled their lead when again Boyle capitalised on some poor defending. Drumpellier knew they had to dig deep to try rescue something from the game and had several chances however excellent last ditch defending on several occasions by Henderson and Walker kept Drumpellier at bay. On half hour mark, Drumpellier pulled back a goal when a corner left player unmarked at back post and big midfielder powered home a header with ease. It was backs to the wall for a few minutes as Drumpellier worked their way into the game but couldn’t convert any chances as McColl, Currie, Walker and Henderson marshalled the defence well. No changes at half time for City as they looked to try increase their lead. Drumpellier however had other ideas as they drew level soon after half time. A free kick saw City try to play offside but the Drumpellier attack ran through and a free header left Wardrop exposed as the ball drop in to level the match. City were short changed in the second half as they seemed to have stalled after the restart. Dickson and Currie looked City’s only outlet down the left but couldn’t put any troubling crosses into the box. On the counter attack 20 mins into second half, Drumpellier took the lead as they broke up the park and the striker beat Wardrop on a one on one. City now looked to have thrown away a 2 goal lead and turned to the bench for inspiration. Reid and Anderson were thrown on for Reynolds and B.Kerr to inject some pace in the City attack and with 12 mins to go Reid levelled. A long kick from Wardrop was won in the air by Boyle and Reid latched on and volleyed home from 20 yards. This was the injection City needed as Drumpellier seemed rocked. As the clock ticked away and penalty’s looking like it was going to decide the match, Reid latch onto a ball on the right wing and with an inviting cross, Boyle dived in bravely on the keeper and headed the ball home to win the match with virtually the last touch of the ball. A relieved City as they march onto the second round. Best for City were Henderson and Boyle with Boyle getting Birds & Bees man of the match for his hat-trick. Next up for City is Stirling Boys Club Wednesday 20th on League Duty at Haws park.

Team: Wardrop, Henderson, Currie, Walker, McColl, Reynolds, (Anderson), C.Kerr, McDowell, Dickson, B.Kerr, (Reid) & Boyle. Not Used: Watt.

League Match 30.08.08

Stirling City F.C. 5 - 1 Craigfoot

City coming of the back of a midweek victory against Stirling boys club, for the 5th game were unable to field the same starting 11 due to various reasons. Out dropped Beveridge & Millan from the squad with starts given to B. Kerr, Anderson and 2 trialists. City failed to start where they left off from Wednesday, gifting Craigfoot easy possession of the ball. The City goal was under pressure within the first 10 minutes and a save from Wardrop from close range kept the score level. Craigfoot however 5 mins later made up from this and took the lead after city lost possession in midfield and the rearguard were caught man on man which the striker raced clear and drove his shot home from 10 yards. City then went on to dominate the rest of the half but could not convert any chances. C. Kerr, Reid, Boyle and Wilson all had attempts in and around the penalty area but never once troubled the visitor's keeper. It seemed only a matter of time before City drew level but the half time whistle seen Craigfoot take a 1 goal lead. No changes from either side as City pushed for the equaliser. Ten minutes into the second half it eventually came when Reid with his predator instinct sniffed out the equaliser. Anderson then had to go off injured but more of a precaution as this was his first outing for several weeks with White replacing him. White soon turned provider when his goal kick was not dealt with and Reid latched onto the through ball and dispatched under the advancing keeper. City now seemed to be in full control of the game and Reid completed his hat-trick soon after. Reynolds then replaced Hislop as city reshuffled the team to accommodate the change and Bo
